"April is the cruellest monthâ€, said the poet T. S. Eliot . It is not just March or April, the whole year is considered as the exam year. Not for the student alone, but the whole family gets preoccupied with preparation for examinations in the present competitive age. Students prepare for the examinations months in advance. The day of the examination is awaited with a mixed feeling. There is a fear of facing a tough paper. Many a time it is like crossing a life time hurdle where the bar seems to be ever so high. Passing out examinations is considered as a passport for a successful career. Examination is a 1400 year old concept of testing ability, knowledge. It came a long way after its start in China, developed by British and later followed worldwide. At present, just pass marks or a high grade won’t help the students or satisfy the parents. Everyone works hard for hundred percent marks and the competition is intense. Many a time the whole family will sacrifice all entertainment for the sake of their child’s exam. Things like serials on television, outings on weekends, family gatherings and many such are all sacrificed on the altar of examinations. The student is forced round the clock to prepare for examinations. They are exhorted to study by their parents, grandparents, teachers, tutors and any one else who may care for the student! All these tensions will cause severe mental strain due to pressures from all sides superimposed on their own ambition of scoring high marks.
